Cerys Birth Story
Cerys was due on April 20th 2001 but that date came and went and I was given
a date for induction, May 4th 2001.
I went into hospital at 9am on May 4th and was monitored and checked to see
how dilated I was. I was only 1cm and I was given some prostaglandin gel to start things going.
By 11am I was having contractions that were extremely painful and I opted for
Pethedine.I was trying to sleep sat up in bed and slept for half an hour and once I woke the pain was back again.I was begging for an epidural at this point but as I was only 2cms I was told I had to wait.
At 9pm I finally got the news of being 4cms and demanded the epidural.
Within 15 minutes it was in place and my legs were slowly going numb.
I spent a further 13 hours on a bed, numb from the waist down just waiting to
hear the words 'You can push now'.
I started pushing at 11:30am May 5th but Cerys would not budge and after an
hour of pushing I was told they were going to try a ventouse (vaccum cup) delivery and if that didn't work I'd need a c section.
After 3 pushes Cerys finally came out (she had been facing my right hip while
in the birth canal so she wasn't able to move down as I pushed).
We had no idea what sex our baby was.During the labour a doctor asked us if
we knew the sex and we said no but everyone thinks it's a boy.As Cerys was pulled out the doctor said 'Well everyone was wrong!'
and my face lit up as she was handed to me.
I had 3 stitches as I tore and was numb until 2am on May 6th but luckily Cerys
was an easy baby that night in hospital and we went home the next day.
