Harvey's Birth Story
I had been having on/off contractions since January 5th which weren't very painful
and on January 6th at 10pm they changed. The contractions were longer and more painful and regular.
At 1am January 7th we called the L & D ward and was told to come in after
crying in pain on the phone. As it was snowing outside it took ages to get to the
hospital as Darren's mum hates driving in the snow.
We got there at 2am and I was 2 cms dilated and was told to walk around to get
things going and to pop back to my room every 2 hours. Each time I was checked
I had dilated 1 cm and when I had reached 4cms the midwife broke my waters to make the contractions stronger and to speed
things up more.
The pain was unbelievable from that point on.I went as long as I could trying
to cope without drugs but I just couldn't.I didn't want an epidural but gave in only because I knew nothing else would work
as well at taking the pain away.Well I was told that there was a major accident at that point and the anaesthesiologist was
there and I would have to wait for him.Well I ended up waiting for about an hour or so.He finally came in and it took him
20 minutes to get the epidural in as I was finding it hard to stay still during contractions.
Finally the pain had gone but within an hour of getting the epidural I started
to feel the pain again.I topped up the epidural but the pain seemed to be getting worse and we called in the midwife. She topped
me up 2 or 3 times and still the pain stayed and got worse. She turned me onto my side but that did nothing and in the end
she said I think your body is just going to fast for the epidural to keep up with.
At this point I was having a strong pain on my pubic bone that just wouldn't
stop and then I threw up.The midwife checked me and I was 9cms and was told I
could start pushing once I felt the urge to.I never felt that urge but just wanted
to push through the pain to get it to stop.I started pushing at 10:20am and Harvey was born at 10:45am.
At one point Harvey got stuck and I had 2 midwives pulling on him to get him
out, he also had the cord around his neck twice and was blue and floppy when he came out. He was rushed into another room
for oxygen.
We left the hospital at 6pm that evening after getting the all clear from doctors.
