Archie's Birth Story

Archie's due date was August 22nd but that date came and went and the midwife rang me and told me, on August 31st that I was booked for induction on Sept 3rd at 7:30am.

I started to give up hope of a home birth happening and went to bed that nite not worrying about anything for the first night in weeks.

At 7:30am September 1st I got out of bed as Darren, Harvey, Cerys and I were in it and I couldn't get comfy so I went into Cerys' bed.

I awoke at 8:30am with pains on my pubic bone every few minutes and didn't know if I was in labour or if I should call my midwife.

I logged onto the Ivillage Home Births Board and asked them what I should do.I stood up from the desk and at 9:12am my waters broke all over the living room floor.I shouted as loud as I could for Darren and decided to run to the bathroom and shout as Darren wasnt getting up.

Darren woke up and had no clue what was going on and I said 'My waters have broken call the midwife!' while sat on the toilet getting pains.

He was rushing around tidying up, getting kids up and dressed while sorting himself out and calling our baby sitters while calling the midwife.

The midwife asked Darren to pass me the phone and she asked when my waters went and how close the pains were and said she'd pop in.

Luckily she was doing the antenatal clinic at our doctors surgery so she was a 5 minute car ride from us.

She got here at 9:40 am and got me off of the toilet to check me.I was 5cms dilated and 80% effaced.The midwife gave me gas and air to help with the pain.I couldn't quite believe it I was actually having one of those fast labours you read about and wish you could have!

At 10:30 I started getting the urges to push and was told not to as the midwife couldn't see Archie's head yet.She was desperately trying to get ahold of another midwife for the birth but was having problems getting anyone to answer the phones.She finally got through to someone just before 11am.

At 11am I decided I could not wait anymore I had to push and that was that.I told Darren to grab the cam corder and made him film it.At 11:05am Archie arrived perfectly healthy.

The second midwife arrived 3 minutes later feeling slightly out of place.

Darren got to cut Archie's cord and the midwife got to watch Archie's birth while we all had cups of tea.

Afterwards the midwife admitted she was telling me not to push not because of not seeing Archie's head but because there wasn't another midwife with her.So Archie would have been born earlier had she let me push at 10:30am.

Archie was born on September 1st 2004, 10 days late at home. He was born at 11:05 am after a very quick 2 hour 45 minute labour. He weighed 8 lbs 6 ozs and was 20.4 inches long. Archie loves pooping, being sick, mummy cuddles, Cerys and Harvey kisses, daddy cuddles and of course mummy's milk.
